Our Patron, St. Mary

St Mary has a unique importance and role in the line of saints venerated by the Christian churches. She is the one who borne God when He took flesh. The Church regards and respects St Mary as the first among saints. (A point to be noted in this regard is that the Church DOESN'T worship St Mary or pray to her; instead the Church seeks her intercession and prays FOR her. God is the only one to be worshipped).

In the orthodox tradition, St Mary is termed as Theotokos (Mother of God) because the scripture says Mary borne and gave birth to God. According to  Arius mother Mary was to be called Christotokos (Mother of Christ). The Synod of Ephesus declared Arius as a heretic and reinforced the term Theotokos.

Due to her humility and piety Mary was chosen by the God to be the mother of Christ, the second of the Holy Trinity. She became the cause of redemption for the entire humanity. She was instrumental in the great plan of God to save the world. Sin entered this world through the first woman Eve and now deliverance has also come through the second Eve, St Mary. The curse that God said to the snake in the Garden of Eden-Woman's offspring will crush your head-fulfilled in St Mary as her offspring Jesus crushed the head of Satan through His self sacrifice and resurrection.

The Church Fathers in their writings pointed out lot of imageries of St Mary in the Old Testament of Bible. Some of them are:

  • The bush in which a ram was caught which was offered as a sacrifice in place of Isaac (Genesis 22)

  • The stairway reaching from earth to heaven which Jacob dreamt at Bethel (Genesis 28)

  • The bush that Moses saw at Sinai, which was on fire but not burning up (Exodus 3)

  • The covenant box of the Temple of Jerusalem containing the gold jar with manna in it, Aaron's stick that had sprouted leaves and the two stone tablets with ten commandments written on them

  • The Eastern Gate of the Holy Temple that the prophet Ezekiel saw in his vision and about which  God had commanded him "This gate will stay closed and will never be opened. No human being is allowed to use it, because I, the Lord God of Israel have entered through it. (Ezekiel 44:2)
